Smart meters needed ‘quickly’ to tackle water shortages

Efforts by water companies to drive down water consumption are not ambitious enough, government's response to Water Resource Management Plans (WRMPs) has said. It calls for smart water meters to be rolled out quickly to meet the reductions needed by 2038. A usage cut of 20% is estimated as essential, but draft WRMPs currently only reach 17% and the gap for non-household customers is bigger at 1.8% against a need of 9%.
