SNP: Scottish independence will boost renewables sector

The Scottish National Party (SNP) has claimed Scottish independence will enable Scotland to “lead the world” in renewable energy.

The remarks were made following the release of statistics that show carbon emissions from power stations have fallen by more than a third in five years in Scotland.

Figures from the Scottish government revealed that greenhouse gas emissions decreased from 18.848 million to 12.147 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent between 2006 and 2011.

Rob Gibson SNP MSP, said: “Scotland has the potential to lead the world in renewable energy – a Yes vote will allow us to continue to prioritise action to reap the rewards of this incredible resource, in contrast to the disastrous decisions being taken on nuclear power by the UK Government.”

A recent report from Scottish Renewables report shows 11,695 people are currently in full time employment in the renewable energy sector in Scotland.

“As well as its crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Scotland’s renewables industry also employs more than 11,000 people and is producing record levels of electricity output – contributing to economic growth while keeping the lights on across the UK,” added Gibson.
