South Staffs Water is trialling up to 1,000 smart water meters in hard-to- reach household locations, it announced today.
The Midlands-based water company has partnered with smart meter consortium SmartReach to install the technology in Kinver, South Staffordshire, which it says will help to spot leaks on people’s property.
It is using a long-range radio connection to target meters in underground chambers and under metal lids that can be hard to communicate with.
Colin Wayper, network director at South Staffs Water, said the system was flexible and could in the long term cover water networks as well as home metering.
