South West Water calls for help to find private sewage pumping stations

South West Water has urged customers to help it locate private sewage pumping stations in the region that serve two or more properties or are located outside the property boundary. The firm admits it does not know where they are and likened the task to "finding a needle in a haystack".

Private pumping stations were not included in the private sewer transfer last October. However, those which serve two or more properties or are outside property boundaries are set to be transferred by October 2016.

SWW knows there are about 900 such stations in its region, but has only found 315.

Head of waste water services, Richard Gilpin said the units could be located anywhere “so it is a bit like looking for needles in a haystack! Sometimes they look like a definite piece of equipment but others are hidden under manhole covers”.

He urged “anyone responsible for a private pumping station to complete our online form so we can get the ball rolling ready for 2016.”
