SSE’s deputy chairman and chairman designate Richard Gillingwater said: “As we said in our annual report, we have been focused on searching for a new non-executive director who could take on the role of senior independent director, and I am very pleased this has resulted in Crawford agreeing to join the board.”

“He has extensive business and management experience in the private sector and strong associations with the public sector as well.”

Gillies began his career as an international management consultant, and is already serving as a non-executive director for both Barclays and Standard Life, and is also the chairman of both control risks group. He is due to stand down from the board of MITIE Group in July and from the role of chairman of Scottish Enterprise later this year.

Gillies said “Energy is a critical resource, and this is a key time for the sector, and I am looking forward to contributing to SSE’s commitment to work for the benefit of customers and investors alike.”
