The Irish renewables arm of big six energy supplier SSE has awarded over £660,000 to community groups in the vicinity of its 26 Irish windfarms.
The record-breaking amount of funding for 156 groups over the last financial year was split with £465,000 for Republic of Ireland projects and £227,000 to ones in Northern Ireland.
This latest funding has raised the SSE Airtricity Community Fund programme’s total funding to £3.3 million for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland over the last 13 years, benefitting 1,739 local projects.
The money has largely supported the installation of energy efficiency and sustainability measures at schools, sports clubs and community centres in communities closest to the wind farms.
SSE Airtricity’s community development officer Anne Reynolds said: “It’s great to see so many of the groups putting the funding towards greater energy efficiency, which is something we’re always promoting at SSE Airtricity.”
“As a company, we strive to make a positive difference to the communities in which we live and work, and with over €4.5 million distributed to date, it’s clear that the Community Fund programme is doing just that.”
