SSE commits £12 million to vulnerable customers

SSE will provide £12 million of support to its most vulnerable customers to help with their energy bills.

Customers who are eligible are identified by the big six supplier and receive credits to their account automatically.

The £12 million fund is redirected money that was left behind for up to seven years by former customers who have moved, cancelled direct debits and failed to provide forwarding addresses.

SSE director of domestic retail Stephen Forbes said: “We know that some customers, for a variety of reasons, may have difficulty with their bills which is why we are providing debt assistance to tens of thousands of customers this year alone.

“We want to do more and we hope that this additional funding will make a difference for customers by freeing them up from energy debt and helping them start afresh.”

SSE has begun advising customers of the payments and will continue over the next few months. Former customers will be able to claim back credit if they come forward at any point.

In September 2014, the big six energy suppliers agreed to pay back up to £153m to former customers who have not reclaimed what they are owed.
