SSE hikes energy prices 9 per cent

SSE has announced a 9 per cent price rise for gas and electricity from 15 October. The firm said rising wholesale prices were to blame, and said it paid 14 per cent more for energy for use this winter than it did last year. Rising networks and environmental and social obligations were also cited as reasons for the price rise.

The company said it would not increases prices again until next summer at the earliest. When the new higher prices kick in, so will SSE’s fixed standing charge and single unit rate. The firm said it will also introduce a discount (£40) for customers who pay by direct debit and choose paperless billing (£6).
