SSE launches new rail business

Big six energy supplier SSE has continued its diversification into other sectors by launching a rail business within its Enterprise arm.

SSE Enterprise Rail will provide electrification, power and mechanical and electrical services to clients in the railway industry, building on the “extensive experience and expertise” it has built up in rail over the last 15 years.

It said the new business has the “significant advantage” of being part of its Enterprise business, allowing it to draw on the funding, asset management understanding and workforce of more than 3,000 people.

Among SSE Enterprise Rail’s existing clients are Network Rail, East Midlands Trains, First Great Western and South West Trains.

The company’s managing director Raj Sinha said: “I am confident that SSE can offer compelling propositions to the sector, particularly through innovative and collaborative ways of powering and funding major projects.”

SSE Enterprise’s managing director Jim McPhillimy said: “The timing is right for SSE to expand its capabilities in the rail sector and become a key provider of holistic electrification, power and mechanical and electrical services throughout the railway industry, fully capitalising on its strong partnerships.

“With Raj at the helm, SSE Enterprise Rail represents the new alternative in the industry.”

Last year SSE ran a major advertising campaign for its new broadband deal it launched in an attempt to build on its position in the sector and make major inroads into the market.
