Bristol Water is to drill boreholes and dig trial pits at the site of a proposed new reservoir at Cheddar over the next few weeks.
Surveying work is to uncover archaeological, soil classification and ecological information to feed into the project designs.
The works begin on Monday 8 October and are due to run for eight weeks. Public consultation on the proposals will launch early next year, in preparation for a planning application in December 2013.
