Sutton and East Surrey Water is the latest firm to consider applying for a drought permit, following Monday's declaration the South East is officially in drought.
The company is discussing with the Environment Agency a potential extension of its licence to draw water from the River Eden for Bough Beach Reservoir beyond April.
Earlier this month, the firm warned Bough Beach was 74 per cent full – 15 per cent below average.
Operations director Mike Hegarty said: “Our resource situation is serious because so far we have not received enough rain in the ‘recharge’ period to replenish the aquifers from which we draw most of our water.”
Meanwhile, the EA has indicated it is likely to grant Southern Water a drought permit to help replenish Bewl reservoir, but will review the details before making a decision.
