Severn Trent Water has acquired Andigestion, an anaerobic digestion plant operator, adding 45 gigawatt hours (GWh) to its annual energy generation capacity.
The recycling business will join Severn Trent’s Green Power company, subject to approval by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
Energy generated from Andigestion’s sites will represent a 16% increase in ST Green Power’s generation output, which for 2022 was 274GWh.
The acquisition will bolster the energy resilience of Severn Trent and contribute to its ambitions to decarbonise and shift to 100% energy from renewable sources by 2030.
Andigestion operates two sites, both based in the south west of England, which will expand ST Green Power’s reach to recycle food waste from households and businesses in that region.
Severn Trent made a triple carbon pledge to achieve net zero emissions, source all energy from renewable sources and convert its vehicle fleet to electric by the end of this decade.
“Having delivered double-digit growth in renewable energy generation since 2020, today’s announcement marks the start of a very exciting next chapter for all of us at Green Power,” said Christer Stoyell, managing director of Green Power.
ST Green Power processes and recycles a quarter of all UK households’ collected food waste at its anaerobic digestion facilities, where it is then converted into clean energy.
