SVT commits to biodiversity with Boost campaign

Severn Trent has set out it ambition to enhance biodiversity in its region with a new campaign of nature-based solutions including planting trees, restoring rivers and peat bogs and planting wildflower meadows.

As part of the Great Big Nature Boost campaign the company committed to reviving 12,000 acres of land, planting 1.3 million trees and restoring 2,000 km of rivers by 2027.

The plans are designed to increase biodiversity and improve the quality of raw water in rivers and streams.

SVT is working with the RSPB, National Trust, Moors for the Future Partnership, the Rivers Trust, National Forest, regional Wildlife Trusts and other conservation stakeholders to improve the natural environment, reduce the use of chemicals and cut carbon emissions.

Chief executive Liv Garfield said: “The improvements we’re committed to making will bring huge environmental benefits for the landscape, habitat and wildlife across the Midlands. Investing in nature-based solutions, rather than concrete and chemicals is a huge win-win for everyone.”

Speaking at a CBI webinar last week, Garfield emphasised the importance of the environment to SVT and the water sector. She said companies should be “using nature rather than fighting against nature”.

The campaign will engage with communities through socially-distanced events at reservoirs throughout October.
