Switching figures ‘eclipse’ previous years

Energy switching reached over 4 million in 2016 after a year of record breaking figures.

The number of customers switching electricity supplier this year was the highest since Energy UK began producing the data three years ago, and follow a previous record of 3.8 million switches in 2015.

Energy UK chief executive Lawrence Slade said: “A record number of people have switched electricity supplier in 2016. This is fantastic progress, but more needs to be done.

“Over forty companies across the industry, big and small, are working hard to win customers. Let’s make 2017 even better and make sure every family is benefitting from the best possible deal.”

In November switching stayed above 400,000 which is the highest since November 2013 and in the summer, Energy UK reported that switching had soared by 58 per cent since June 2014.

Earlier this year Energy UK data also revealed that 120,115 customers switched to small and mid-tier suppliers in June, which was 33 per cent of all switches for the month.
