Switching hits two-year peak in October

The number of customers switching energy provider has hit its highest level since November 2013, Energy UK has revealed.

Almost 438,000 customers switched supplier in October, narrowly surpassing the 417,000 customers who switched in March 2015.

A quarter of switches in October, or 110,000, were made to small suppliers. This has remained at a consistent rate since the beginning of the year.

The industry data also shows that overall switching has been consistently higher during 2015 than last year, with the monthly average being 310,000 switches compared to 250,000 last year.

A total of three million customers have switched so far in 2015.

Energy UK’s chief executive Lawrence Slade said: “The two year high proves people are more engaged with their energy providers and the work industry and Government are doing to encourage customers to switch has really helped to push numbers up.”
