Switching level drops as government campaign ends

Energy UK has revealed that the switching level in April dropped by 81,000 from the ‘extraordinary’ figures seen in March following the end of Government’s Power to Switch advertising campaign.

The latest electricity switching data shows a 24 per cent decline from 417,394 in March to 335,826 households which changed supplier in April 2015. But the number is still an increase of 46,000, around 14 per cent, on the level in April 2014. The total number of switches for the year to date is now over 1.2 million.

Energy UK chief executive Lawrence Slade, said: “This month’s continued momentum is particularly positive given last month’s extraordinary figures were supported by government’s Power to Switch advertising campaign.

The ‘Power to Switch’ campaign was a national, regional and online advertising campaign that informed people they could save an average of £200 by switching. It was launched in February by the former energy and climate change secretary Ed Davey and lasted four weeks.

Energy UK said small suppliers gained 84,471 electricity accounts in April, around 25 per cent of the total. This percentage has remained fairly constant since January, but is a drop of 13 per cent on the level gained by small suppliers in April 2014.

“Once again, we have seen thousands of households switch to smaller suppliers. This is proof that the energy industry is working,” he said.
