The Crown Estate is planning to lease further tidal and marine sites to encourage and accelerate technology development.
The new leasing regime will also see the introduction of demonstration zones, which offer the appropriate tidal and marine resources but are close to essential infrastructure, such as ports and the electricity grid.
The Crown Estate will also offer third parties the right to manage of the zones, allowing them to undertake preparatory work, such as installing infrastructure.
These management companies will be required to demonstrate a strong understanding of local interests.
Huub den Rooijen, head of offshore wind at The Crown Estate, said: “The emerging wave and tidal industry has already taken great strides, but we want to encourage faster progress in technology development and rapid cost reduction.
“By introducing managed demonstration zones we’re offering a key opportunity to other organisations to lend tangible support in their local areas.”
