Three EU countries hit 2020 renewables targets

Three European countries have already hit their 2020 renewable energy targets, the latest figures from Eurostat show.

Estonia was the first to pass that milestone in 2011, attaining the 25 per cent mark on the back of wind power and biofuels growth. Sweden and Bulgaria followed in 2012, meeting targets of 49 per cent (mainly from hydro power) and 16 per cent respectively.

Across Europe, renewable sources contributed an estimated 14.1 per cent of gross final energy consumption in 2012. The aim is to reach 20 per cent by 2020.

The UK had the furthest to go towards its target of 15 per cent, sitting at 4.2 per cent in 2012. Only Malta and Luxembourg had a smaller renewable share.
