The chair of the Energy and Climate Change select committee (ECCC), Tim Yeo, has been reported to the Metropolitan Police by political blogger Guido Fawkes.

Fawkes, also known as Paul Staines, sent a letter to the Metropolitan Police today (10 June) calling for the Conservative MP to be investigated for breaking the Bribery Act 2010.

Video footage obtained by a national newspaper, shows Yeo suggesting he coached John Smith, the managing director of GB Rail Freight – a firm owned by Eurotunnel, which also pays the MP for being a non-executive director – on how to influence MPs.

Yeo has vigorously denied any allegations, and in a statement, said: “I want to make it clear that I totally reject these allegations.”

He added that his comments had been taken out of context and that he had at no point offered to work for the undercover reporters and that his lawyer had yet to receive the full recording following a request to the newspaper.

In the letter seen by Utility Week, Staines said: “This seems improper, given Mr Yeo has declared that he has received £37,483 in the last 12 months from Eurotunnel SA.”

He added: “I urge you to proceed with an investigation using the evidence available.”

The South Suffolk MP added he refused to establish an All Party Parliamentary Group to help the cause of the fictitious client, and refused to pass on names of any MPs who may be interested in joining such a group.

The MP has referred himself to the parliamentary standards Commissioner, stating he wants “this matter to be thoroughly investigated by an independent body”.

“I am confident that I have acted in accordance with the MPs Code of Conduct at all times,” he added.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said it had yet to receive the letter.
