French oil major Total has officially opened the Laggan-Tomore gas fields near the Shetland Islands and the processing plant serves them.
Situated almost 80 miles west of the islands, the fields have been producing gas since the first half of February. Production has now ramped up to the equivalent of 90,000 barrels of oil per day. After being processed at the new plant the gas is exported to the mainland.
Total is operating the fields alongside Dong Energy and SSE, both of which own a 20 per cent stake in the venture. The same partners are also developing the nearby Edradour and Glenlivet fields, which are due to start production in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
Energy secretary Amber Rudd, who attended the opening, said: “This vote of confidence in the offshore oil and gas industry is great news for the Shetland Islands and for the UK as a whole, creating jobs and providing secure, affordable energy to the UK’s families and businesses for decades to come.”
Chairman and chief executive of Total Patrick Pouyanné said: “This subsea-to-shore development is the first of its kind in the country and will provide the domestic market with 8 per cent of its daily gas requirements while enabling the potential for further developments in the West of Shetland area.”
