The UK energy sector has overtaken financial services in the trust stakes but still lags behind most industries, according to an annual survey by PR agency Edelman.

Among the “informed public” surveyed, 38 per cent trust the energy industry to do what is right, up from 31 per cent in 2012. That was just one percentage point higher than the general public, on 37 per cent. The renewables subsector fared better, on 60 per cent.

The UK compared badly against the rest of the world, with 57 per cent of people trusting the energy sector globally.

The energy sector beat banks and the media but trailed telecoms, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods. Technology came top, on 72 per cent.
