UKPN boosts protection for vulnerable customers

UK Power Networks has revealed its plan to introduce a new “emergency pack” for vulnerable customers to use in the event of a power cut.

The new pack will contain helpful items including a plug-in-the-wall torch that automatically switches on when there is a power cut, a glow stick and a storage bottle where people can keep vital personal and medical information, to be used in the event of an emergency.

The pack will be offered to those who are signed up for UK Power Network’s (UKPN’s) Prioirty Services Register, a list of customers who are likely to be in need of additional support if their power supplies are cut off.

UKPN told MPs about its new scheme at an event in Westminster on Tuesday and it was widely welcomed.

Steve Reed MP supported the launch event and said: “I will be encouraging my constituents who may need extra help in a power cut to call 0800 169 9970 and sign up to the free Priority Services Register.”

UK Power Networks chief executive Basil Scarsella said that although the electricity distributor had reduced the number of power cuts across its licence area by over 40 per cent since 2010, “if there is a power cut then being on the Priority Services Register means our dedicated team know who they need to contact to provide tailored support”.

UKPN also used its emergency pack launch event to highlight the top 10 constituencies in its area with the highest number of customers already on the Priority Services Register. It urged MP’s to “spread the word” about the additional support on offer for those in need.
