UKPN challenges data geeks to predict EV charging hotspots

UK Power Networks (UKPN) has launched a new competition challenging people to use information already freely available through its website to predict the emergence of new electric vehicle charging hotspots.

The Charge Challenge is open to anyone from any background. Entrants will be judged based on their methodology, use of data, validity and creativity.

The company said its in-house data team already analyses large volumes of information in an effort to forecast when and where these hotspots will emerge so they can better plan their investment and save money for consumers in the long run.

Participants have been asked to lend a hand by giving their predictions of the locations where large number of electric vehicles charge points will be installed over the next two to five years. They will be able to use information made available through UKPN’s Open Data webpage in March, which includes the data behind its future energy scenarios.

Ian Cameron, head of customer services and innovation at UKPN, said: “We are determined to push boundaries and create a culture of open innovation and data sharing to facilitate the net zero revolution.

“We’re launching this challenge because to be truly innovative we can’t do this alone – we want to co-create this open data sharing environment with interested parties from across the board to come forward and help us lead the charge.”

Entrants are required to submit a report outlining their efforts and listing their predictions by 20 July. Winners will receive an iPad Air and get the opportunity to work with the company’s data team to develop their ideas further.
