UKPN to employ satellite communication to cut power outages

UK Power Networks is set to improve the security of its electricity distribution network and cut the number and duration of power outages by building a new satellite communications network.

UKPN said it will retain full control and visiblity of its distribution infrastructure with a constant connection to 700 remote sites across its networks in the South East and East of England, even in the event of a disruption to the National Grid.

The company has awarded the contract to replace the network to communications infrastructure and media services company Arqiva.

UKPN said migration to the new encrypted VSAT communications network started in July 2015 and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2016.

UKPN operational telecoms manager Roger Yeo said: “We are committed to providing consumers with a safe and reliable electricity supply and having made great strides in reducing the number and duration of power cuts. This is another critical way to help our engineers restore power supplies quickly.”
