United Utilities starts £77m sewage upgrades

United Utilities is upgrading its sewage plant at Burnley to improve the health of the Rivers Calder and Ribble, which the site discharges treated effluent into. The company will spend £77.7 million to increase storage and treatment capacity that will reduce the need to use combined sewer overflows during periods of heavy rain.
