Utilities ready for flooding in Wales

Utility firms in Wales are confident that their flood protection measures will stand up to the elements after the country was today put on flood alert by the Environment Agency.

Western Power Distribution (WPD) said that it had invested some £2.5 million this year on new flood walls, installing water pumps, and raising equipment and switch rooms to above ground level. It plans to spend a further £12 million on flood resistance over the next five years.

As the UK endures one of the wettest summers on record, WPD said the investment was paying dividend. “Despite the recent terrible weather we’ve only experienced minor flooding in a few of our compounds,” said network services manager for Wales, Phil Davies. “The new measures seem to have paid off.”

Should flooding occur, a Welsh Water spokesman said “robust contingency plans” would ensure minimal disruption.
