The utilities sector has paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who has died aged 96.
The UK’s longest-serving monarch passed away on Thursday afternoon at her Scottish estate, Balmoral.
She came to the throne in 1952 and was last seen in public welcoming the 15th prime minister of her reign, Liz Truss, on Tuesday.
News of her declining health first emerged during a debate in the House of Commons around support for energy billpayers this Winter. An announcement about her passing was issued by Buckingham Palace this evening.
David Smith, chief executive of Energy Networks Association, said: “It is with great sorrow that today we learned of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. On behalf of the United Kingdom’s energy network operators, we send our deepest sympathies to the Royal Family on this day of sadness for the nation.”
A spokesperson for Energy UK said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty The Queen. The thoughts of Energy UK and our members are with the Royal Family at this time.”
A spokesperson for Water UK said: “Everyone in the water industry is deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty the Queen and our sincerest condolences go to the Royal Family.
“Like the rest of the nation we pay tribute to, and give thanks for, her decades of dedicated public service.”
Ellen Bennett, Utility Week portfolio director, said: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty was an inspiration to people the world over. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the Royal Family as we give thanks for the selfless contribution of our country’s longest-serving monarch.”
