Utility companies should look to the retail, telecoms and financial sectors to recruit innovative and creative leaders, research by executive search and selection specialists Veredus has shown.
It said recruiters should look to these other sectors which have already encountered and overcome difficulties currently present in the energy sector, such as low customer satisfaction levels.
Veredus said the survey of energy professionals at the Energy UK conference found that 43 per cent said innovation and creativity will be the most valuable skill sets for the sector over the next decade.
It also showed that 26 per cent felt improving customer service skills within the industry was a priority.
Veredus director of energy and utilities, Aaron Webster, said: “Businesses need to focus on hiring leadership talent that can develop a new relationship with customers, foster a creative and innovative environment while engaging and collaborating to deliver new products and models of delivery to drive the best results.”

“This sort of thinking comes from having the right leaders and is exactly what the energy industry needs.”
“Of course, in the long term businesses must also look to develop talent pipelines and grow their own talent, however this won’t be effective without leaders who can foster a healthy and creative working environment.”
