Utility Week celebrates success of industry at 2018 awards

The winners for the Utility Week Awards 2018 were revealed at the greatest utilities show, at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane in London tonight (10 December).

Recognising excellence across the industry, a total of 15 awards were handed out to individuals and organisations, who have demonstrated excellence and achieved outstanding performance in the last year.

The industry took a moment to remember and raise a glass to the late chief executive of Western Power Distribution, Robert Symons who was recognised as this year’s Industry Achiever.

Tributes were paid to Symons who died last month following a battle with cancer.

Utility Week’s acting editor Suzanne Heneghan, described him as “an individual who made a lifetime contribution that was second to none.”

Alison Sleightholm, director of resources and external affairs at Western Power Distribution, added: “Robert epitomised all that is great about our sector.”

More than 1,400 people from the utility sector attended the Greatest Showman-themed gala dinner and awards ceremony, which was hosted by comedian and presenter Sue Perkins.

Anglian Water scooped the coveted Utility of the Year Award, which is always a hard-fought category.

The company impressed our panel of experts in the rigorous two-stage judging process with its strong leadership, business transformation, long-term thinking and all-round performance.

Judges wanted to reward Anglian Water for its proactive approach to dealing with some of the biggest issues facing utilities today.

Anglian was described as a “confident company, ready to get on the front foot without losing its focus on operational excellence.”

The company also recently beat the likes of Google, Ikea and Apple to be named the UK’s best place to work in a list compiled by employer review site Glassdoor.

This year’s Utility Week Awards also saw the introduction of four new categories reflecting the exciting strides the sector is making in areas including customer engagement, diversity and innovation. The final new category also shone a light on utility partners, for which Energy & Utility Skills was rewarded.

UK Power Networks and United Utilities each walked away with three awards, while Northumbrian Water added two more to its trophy cabinet following on from its big win of Utility of the Year in the 2017 awards.

The awards were judged by a leading panel of independent experts.
