UU invests £23m in treatment works upgrade

United Utilities has begun work upgrading an historic water treatment works in Lancaster to continue meeting the needs of the area including providing resilience in the face of climate change challenges.

The site, which was completed in 1927, will have £23 million spent to ensure the highest standard of drinking water. Work will include replacing stacked pressure filters with rapid gravity filters.

These 5-metre-deep filters must be fitted into the site while the existing filters remain functional to prevent any disruption to supply. The existing filters have been in use for 94 years to serve the populations of Preston, Blackpool and the surrounding areas.

Water production manager Chris Baker said: “The works was built at the same time as Stocks Reservoir because the quality of water up here in the north Pennines is so good. Over the years most of the site has been modernised, but the Bells Filters have been here since day one! They’ve done well but the time has come to replace them to carry on providing great quality drinking water to our customers.”
