Energy companies largely outperformed their water counterparts in the latest carbon reduction commitment (CRC) league table, published by the Environment Agency today.

The top ranked utility in the CRC table for 2011/12 – which ranks more than 2,000 organisations on their energy efficiency – was EDF Energy, which came 49th.

Centrica, SSE, and RWE Npower came 227th, 258th and 299th respectively; while the top placed water company was Northumbrian Water (286th), followed by Southern Water (376th) and Wessex Water (398th).

Eon (460) and Scottish Power (463) came inside the top 500, with Northern Ireland Water and Thames Water coming 613th and 644th respectively.

Severn Trent (727), United Utilities (859), Scottish Water (989) and Yorkshire Water (993) also finished in the top half of the table.

Anglian Water (1,134), South East Water (1,222), and Dee Valley Water (1,739) all were ranked in the bottom half.

Ofgem came 96th, ahead of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (153rd) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (645th).

The top three were BAM Group, Skanska and Motorola, while last year’s table toppers, Manchester United, fell to 488th.
