Wessex Water pledges to keep paper bills an option

Wessex Water has pledged to give customers choice on how they receive their communications.

The company today signed up to the Keep Me Posted Campaign’s Right to Choose pledge, a move to ensure customers will not be penalised if they choose to receive paper bills.

Utilities are beginning to shift away from monthly paper billing and towards a preference for online services in a bid to drive down costs and improve efficiencies.

Wessex will introduce online billing next year.

Sue Lindsay, head of customer relations at Wessex Water, said: “We believe it is important that our customers have the right to choose in what format they would like to receive their bill, information or advice from us.

“Although we will be introducing online billing early next year, customers will have the choice whether they would like to sign up for an account or continue to get a free paper bill.”

ONS data reveals that 7.1 million adults (15 per cent) in the UK have never used the internet and only a third of elderly people have ever been online. Go-On UK estimates that 16 million consumers aged over 15 do not have basic online skills.
