Yorkshire Water has taken on 16 apprentices out of a record 600 applicants. The company created extra roles to help keep up with demand.
The successful candidates undergo a two year programme including college study, mentoring and practical experience in various fields.
The starting salary is £11,742 and all will be offered a full-time job at the end of the apprenticeship.
Yorkshire Water spokesman Matt Thompson said: “Every year, we get a fantastic response in terms of applications for places on our apprenticeship scheme, but this year has surpassed all expectations.”
He added: “It’s been incredibly hard to select 16 from such a strong field of entries, but we’ve eventually got there, and we’re really pleased to have such enthusiastic and talented people coming into our business at such an exciting time.”
