Yorkshire Water has commissioned engineering, environment and design consultancy, Sweco UK to upgrade its monitoring system across its sewerage network.

As part of the three-year contract, Sweco will manage the installation of telemetry assets at 1,200 wastewater sites.

The company said the devices will provide “accurate data” every 15 minutes, which will allow Yorkshire Water to monitor and manage the performance of its assets.

Andy Sewell, Yorkshire Water’s telemetry water manager, said: “Yorkshire Water has awarded phase two of its delivery to meet the environmental monitoring programme to Sweco. This multi-million investment from Yorkshire Water will see the installation of telemetry monitors across the region to meet regulatory compliance obligations by 2020.

“The new system will monitor the wastewater network every 15 minutes using remote sensing technology. This award to Sweco and technology framework suppliers is a key programme of work in our £54 million AMP 6 investment we are making to improve monitoring across the region.”

The assets management team at Sweco will oversee the project’s delivery which will involve desktop and site surveys, specifying devices and managing installation contractors.

Jacqui Briggs, portfolio lead at Sweco, said: “Accurately monitoring and reporting the performance of wastewater assets will provide Yorkshire Water with vital intelligence as it continues to push on with its investment programme.”

It is currently contracted on Asset Management Period (AMP6) frameworks with seven of the 12 UK water and sewerage companies.

These include United Utilities, South West Water, Wessex Water, Northern Ireland Water, Welsh Water, Southern Water and Northumbrian Water.

Sweco has been working with Yorkshire water for more than 12 years, the project will help the supplier meet customers’ needs and improve its infrastructure, data capture and analytics capabilities.
